Benefits of Invisalign Over Traditional Metal Braces | Valencia CA

invisalign

When it comes to straightening your teeth for a more confident smile, the end result is more or less the same when using either regular metal braces or the Invisalign system. However, many people prefer the latter for many reasons. The Invisalign system uses a combination of advanced 3D computer imaging technology and a series of clear aligners to gently and steadily move your teeth to the ideal position.

One of the biggest challenges of metal braces is the need to adopt new techniques to clean your teeth. You need special devices to floss, and you take more time than usual when brushing, which can be inconvenient. With Invisalign, you simply remove the aligners to brush your teeth, clean them, and then replace them in your mouth. This drastically reduces the risk of cavities or damage.

Here are another 5 benefits of Invisalign compared to regular braces:

  • Discrete – The aligners are made from clear plastic that is virtually invisible. This means that you can carry on with your normal routine while improving your smile, all without having to endure the embarrassment of wearing metal braces.
  • Eat normally – Invisalign aligners are removable, which means that you can continue to eat your favorite dishes. Once done, simply clean your teeth and mouth and place them back in.
  • Low risk of injury – Invisalign is a more comfortable orthodontic treatment compared to regular metal braces. There are no brackets or wires that will pop free and injure (cut or scrape) your gums, lips, or tongue. There is no risk of wires popping when chewing unexpectedly hard foods.
  • Maintain an active lifestyle – When participating in sports, you can simply remove your aligners and wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth or mouth. Depending on the sport, you can even choose to keep them in if there’s no risk of damage.
  • Play wind instruments – You can continue playing your wind instrument while undergoing your Invisalign treatment.

Final Note

Ultimately, Invisalign gives you the flexibility to continue with your normal activities, uninterrupted, while improving your smile for greater confidence, self-esteem, and overall happiness. Please consult your dentist in Valencia, CA to determine if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign.

Dental Veneers FAQ | Valencia CA

dental veneers

Is teeth whitening necessary before placing dental veneers?

Dental veneers are color-matched to the current shade of your other teeth to create a uniform look. But unlike natural teeth, porcelain veneers cannot be stained, discolored, or bleached to change their color. So over time, your natural teeth will discolor, making the white veneers more dominant. To prevent this, your dentist may recommend whitening before the veneer process so your porcelain veneers are matched to your whitened teeth. Afterward, you will need a regular whitening schedule to maintain a uniform smile. Composite veneers tend to stain over time, so bleaching is optional before their placement.

How long do veneers last?

Composite veneers, which are installed in one appointment, have a shorter life span compared to porcelain veneers. They tend to chip and stain if not looked after. Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, are stain-free and tend to last longer. Although durability depends on how well you care for your veneers, both types should last 10 to 20 years.

When would I be considered an unsuitable candidate for porcelain veneers?

There are several instances when your cosmetic dentist in Valencia, CA may determine that veneers are not the best treatment for you, including:

  • If you have untreated tooth decay. It is not advisable to simply cover up the infection with veneers, as the situation will keep getting worse, increasing the risk of tooth loss.
  • If you have been diagnosed with bruxism. If you grind your teeth or clench your jaws at night, then you might damage your veneers reducing their durability. If you proceed with the treatment, your dentist may offer custom night guards to reduce the stress on your teeth and veneers.
  • If you have a case of malocclusion or bad bite. Poorly aligned teeth may cause uneven stress on your teeth, such as those fitted with veneers, ruining the restoration.

Can dental veneers be repaired?

Though the dental veneers are non-living, the tooth underneath and the surrounding gum tissues are living, and prone to change over time. For instance, shrinkage of the gum line may expose the root surfaces, affecting the position of the veneer relative to the rest of the tooth. Porcelain veneers are very tough and durable, and cannot be repaired. However, they can be replaced if they crack, break, or sustain any other kind of damage or require some kind of change.

All You Need to Know About Living With Orthodontic Appliances | Valencia CA

orthodontic appliances

There are many different orthodontic appliances used to straighten teeth, most of which are designed to minimize their appearance. Modern appliances are smaller and sleeker, and some are virtually invisible, like clear aligners. Your orthodontist will advise you on the best options for your specific needs.

Here are some things you can expect while living with orthodontic appliances:

  • Regular dental appointments: During active treatment, you will need to visit your orthodontist every 4 to 8 weeks. After treatment, when you start wearing retainers, you will need to schedule appointments every 3 to 6 months.
  • Normal routine with a few changes in diet: You should be able to do almost anything during your orthodontic treatment, including dining out, playing musical instruments, singing, and kissing. Your orthodontist will advise you on the necessary changes to your lifestyle, such as diet choices, but most adults are able to adjust perfectly.
  • Collaboration with other dental practitioners: Your orthodontist will work with your periodontist or general dentist to improve the health of your gums and prepare you for orthodontic treatment. If you have already been treated for periodontal disease, and are eligible for orthodontic treatment, then you can proceed with regular supervision from your periodontist.

Is orthodontic treatment affordable?

The cost of orthodontic treatment depends on several factors, including:

  • The severity of your problem
  • Complexity of the issue
  • Duration of treatment

During your initial consultation, your orthodontist in Valencia, CA will discuss the cost of your custom treatment plan with you before it begins. With better materials and techniques, orthodontic treatment is more affordable today than ever.

Keep in mind that modern orthodontic materials and techniques have made treatment more comfortable and affordable than ever so you can continue to live as normal as possible. Moreover, most orthodontists offer a range of convenient payment plans, and your dental insurance plan may also cover orthodontic benefits.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Exams and Cleanings? | Valencia CA

dental exams

Yes. Every individual, including your toddler, elderly parent, and everyone in between, can benefit from dental exams and professional teeth cleaning. Even if you feel like everything is alright, many dental and gum problems don’t cause any obvious symptoms, like pain or bleeding, until they’re quite advanced. Through routine dental exams, your dentist can detect and treat potential issues before they start to cause any symptoms.

Preventative Care

One of the biggest components of modern family dentistry is preventative care. Not only does it keep your smile healthy, but also works to prevent most dental issues from ever arising, or at least stop them in their early stages before they develop into serious, painful, and expensive problems.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends getting a cleaning and exam every six months, which is why most dental plans cover two exams and two cleanings per year. People at high risk, however, may need more frequent cleanings and exams. Risk factors include:

  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Pregnancy
  • Cavity-prone
  • Gum disease
  • Weak immune system

Dental Guidelines

It’s important to visit your dentist for professional cleanings and exams regardless of how much time has passed since your last dental appointment. After your teeth cleaning and examination, the dentist will give you guidelines to follow to maintain optimal oral health until your next dental appointment.

These guidelines may involve:

  • Maintaining or adjusting your dental routine
  • Changing your flossing or brushing technique
  • Changing bad oral habits

In addition, if any problems were found during the exam, your dentist will recommend appropriate treatments and book your appointment at a later date to deliver the treatment. If no problem was found, then you simply need to keep up your good daily dental routine.

Keep in mind that of all types of dental care (preventive, cosmetic, restorative), preventive care is the most comfortable and affordable. So keeping your dental appointments for regular brushing and flossing is a smart investment that will save you a lot more down the road.

How Do I Know What Toothpaste to Buy?

How Do I Know What Toothpaste to Buy?

Toothpaste is one of those items in the grocery store we usually just mindlessly grab based on price. However, believe it or not there are differences in the toothpastes you are purchasing. Next time you’re in the grocery store, step back and take a look at how many brands you’ll see – with most brands sporting several different types of toothpaste. What do you choose?

The Key Ingredient: Fluoride

When we brush, the main goal is to remove any plaque from our teeth that have been accumulating. As such, we recommend you to purchase toothpastes that contain fluoride. How do I know? The toothpaste will mention it somewhere on the package. If it’s not obvious, then simply look at the ingredients label on the back and it will be there.

Another way to confirm if the toothpaste contains fluoride is to look for the American Dental Association seal of approval noted by the badge, which contains the letters “ADA” on the packaging.

Important note: it is possible to manage the removal of plaque on teeth, but overtime if plaque is not addressed then it forms into a harder substance known as tartar. Some toothpastes offer “Tartar Protection”, but the only real way to remove tartar is at your dentist’s office using special tools.

What if I have sensitive teeth?

Those with sensitive teeth and gums should look into toothpastes that have desensitizing ingredients such as strontium chloride and potassium nitrate. These ingredients help block the pathways that lead to the nerves, which may be slightly exposed – causing your pain. A popular brand is Sensodyne.

Important note: chronically sensitive teeth may point to an underlying issue with your teeth or gums. If you notice teeth are still sensitive even after using specialized toothpastes, then schedule an appointment with your dentist for an examination and x-rays to make sure nothing serious is present.

What about dentures? What do I use?

If you have dentures, then any toothpaste that has the ADA seal of approval will work fine. However, we suggest using effervescent tablets or solutions as they provide a more effective clean.

Choosing the Right Powered Toothbrush

Does the toothbrush you select matter? Absolutely.

Choosing the Right Powered Toothbrush

Choosing the Right Powered Toothbrush

When you decide to finally purchase a powered toothbrush, you will find that there are many options to select from. This is precisely why we felt the need to craft a brief guide for you in determining the best fitting powered toothbrush.

There are three types of powered toothbrushes currently on the market:

Oscillating/Rotating Toothbrushes

Oscillating toothbrushes, such as the popular one offered by Oral-B, are electric toothbrushes in which the head spins very fast in one direction for an effective clean. These work very well for children & seniors and also happen to be rechargeable.

Sonic Toothbrushes

Sonic toothbrushes, such as the Sonicare offered by Philips, are essentially the same as oscillating/rotating toothbrushes, but differ in their mechanism. Sonic toothbrushes vibrate, rather than spin. Both are equally effective and emit roughly the same amount of power and are rechargeable.

There are many options to select from in selecting either an oscillating/rotating or sonic toothbrush, all with their own bells & whistles such as digital reminders, toothbrushes specialized for whitening or sensitive teeth, and even gum-massaging action.

Battery Powered Electric Toothbrushes

If you want extra power, but are skeptical of powered, rechargeable electric toothbrushes, then battery-powered toothbrushes are a great option. They are similar in design to manual toothbrushes, but are battery-operated (AA battery) & vibrate for a pulsating effective clean.

Electric Has Been Clinically Proven to be Better

No matter the choice of electric toothbrush you select, the fact remains that both options are considerably more effective than regular manual toothbrushes, as documented by various studies. This doesn’t mean manual toothbrushes do not work, but simply that they are not as efficient.

To put this efficiency into perspective, let’s compare 1 minute of brushing with both options. Using an electric toothbrush – depending on the brand – you will receive an output of roughly 6,000 – 30,000 strokes per minute. That’s an effective clean.

Thinking of Replacing Your Dental Fillings?

replacing dental fillingsA dental filling is a type of restoration intended to replace tooth structure lost through trauma or decay. Dental fillings typically last many years, but the constant assault from eating and drinking, combined with stress from clenching or grinding, may eventually cause a dental filling to fail.

Fillings that have chipped, cracked, worn away, or fallen out may leave spaces between the tooth and the filling, providing entry points for bacteria in your mouth – in saliva and plaque. If the seal between the filling and tooth breaks down, food debris and caries-causing bacteria may find a place to hide inside the tooth where a toothbrush cannot reach them easily, causing decay to develop along the edge of the filling or underneath it.

Decay that is undetected and untreated can progress and infect the dental pulp (contains the tooth’s blood supply and nerves) resulting in loss of the tooth, or endodontic treatment (root canal).

Other reasons to consider replacing a filling:

The factors mentioned above are actually the only reasons why a dentist may recommend the removal and replacement of a filling. However, some patients may want a replacement for esthetic reasons, like:

  • You don’t like how the composite filling was shaped
  • You don’t feel like the colors were properly matched, or bleaching your teeth left the enamel whiter than the filling
  • The fitting done on your filling feels uncomfortable

Importance of Routine Dental Check-ups

Going for regular dental examinations is important because any problems with existing fillings can be detected in the early stage. While you may not be able to identify when your filling is worn, your dentist can detect any weaknesses, chips, or decay in it during a routine check-up.

During the checkup, the dentist evaluates whether the existing fillings are intact or worn away using an instrument called an “explorer” to gently check worn spots around the filling’s edge. This is a useful tool that helps the dentist establish if the dental filling is sealed to the tooth, or if it is worn to the extent that a replacement is necessary.

In some cases, X-rays may be required to help detect caries under existing dental fillings or between teeth, neither of which can be identified by simply looking at the tooth. Once the dentist finds proof that a filling has failed, or spots decay on the radiograph, it is important that the filling be replaced promptly. You should never wait until a crack appears in the filling or the tooth starts to hurt.

Early detection and treatment of failed fillings can reduce the need for extensive, and usually costly, restoration procedures. There are a number of tooth-colored materials that can be used for your new fillings, with varying levels of performance, longevity, and cost. These include amalgam, composite, and glass ionomers.

The best choice of material should be determined by the patient in consultation with the dentist. So, discuss your options before commencing any treatment.
